Makivo

How Makivo got its name

The maker, alive.

Maker + vivo — Latin for “I live.” Five steps from a steel engraving tool to a name that says what the app is for.

01

Burin

We started out calling the app Burin. A burin is the small steel tool an engraver pushes through metal by hand, and we liked that it stood for careful, deliberate work. But every time we explained the name, we had to explain it. A product name should not need a footnote.

02

The Maker

So we went back to the beginning and asked a simpler question. What does the app actually do for the person using it?

The answer kept coming out the same way. It takes an idea from someone’s head and makes it real. A sketch becomes a vector. A vector becomes a toolpath. A toolpath becomes sawdust on the floor and a finished piece on the bench. The app does not make things. The maker makes things. The app just makes the maker faster, surer, and a little braver.

That gave us the first half of the name. Maker.

03

Maker + Vivo

For the second half we went looking for a word that meant “alive”, because that is the moment we care about most. It is the second the spindle starts turning and the design stops being pixels. The Latin word is vivo. I live.

Put the two together and you get Makivo. The maker, alive.

04

The Six Letters

Then something nice happened. We wrote the name on the whiteboard and someone noticed that the six letters lined up with six words we had been saying all week.

M —

Make

The whole point.

M — Make.
The whole point.
A — Art.
What goes in before any machine is involved.
K — Kerf.
The width of the cut, the first thing a laser or router user learns to respect.
I — Inlay.
One piece fitted into another so well you cannot see the seam.
V — Vector.
The line the machine follows.
O — Origin.
The machine zero, the spot every job starts from.

05

The Origin

We did not plan that. We just liked that it was true.

Origin in particular stuck with us. Every maker sets an origin before every job. It is the one small ritual that CNC routers, laser cutters, and plotters all share, and it is where every cut begins.

So Makivo means two things at once. It is the maker, alive, in the moment the work starts. And it is a short list of the things we built the app to do well.

The burin is still on the bench. We just gave the app a name that says what it is for.

See where every cut begins.

Makivo is in development for Mac and iPad.
